News Release | March 6th, 2026

NIPIGON — Today, MPP Holland announced the Ontario government is investing up to $431,959 to rehabilitate water infrastructure in the Township of Nipigon. The funding comes from the province’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Health and Safety Water Stream (MHIP-HSWS), which has increased by $700 million for a total of $875 million to support access to safe drinking water, housing, job creation and protection for communities in the event of extreme weather events.

“This investment reflects our government’s commitment to strengthening core infrastructure in communities like Nipigon. By supporting essential water systems, we are helping protect public health, encourage responsible growth and create the right conditions for jobs and new housing.” said The Hon. Kevin Holland, MPP for Thunder Bay – Atikokan.” Reliable infrastructure is the foundation of strong communities, and we will continue to stand with municipalities as they plan for the future.”

The MHIP-HSWS funding will be used in the Township of Nipigon to reconstruct their Wastewater Infrastructure – Nipigon Hospital Gravity System via Hogan Road.

“This investment that the Township of Nipigon is receiving through the Water Safety Stream under the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program will assist the community in improving essential wastewater infrastructure that is integral to the NDMH’s proposed Long-Term Care expansion, “said Suzanne Kukko, Mayor of the Township of Nipigon. “We are very grateful to the Province and the Ministry for supporting this important project.”

“This funding strengthens the backbone of our community. For Nipigon District Memorial Hospital, dependable water infrastructure is essential to safe patient care today and a critical enabler of our Long-Term Care expansion application currently under review.” said Shannon Cormier, President and CEO of the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital. “When core infrastructure is strong, healthcare can grow, families can settle, and communities can flourish. Today’s announcement reinforces Nipigon’s readiness for tomorrow.”

This funding is part of a historic investment of $4 billion in the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP), included in Ontario’s more than $223 billion capital plan, the most ambitious in the province’s history, to build transit, highways, hospitals, schools and water infrastructure that enables new housing.

“As we continue to navigate economic uncertainty and unwarranted U.S. tariffs, our government is protecting Ontario by investing in critical infrastructure that drives growth, creates jobs and strengthens communities,” said Todd McCarthy, Acting Minister of Infrastructure. “Through our historic $4 billion Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, we are giving municipalities and First Nations the tools they need to get shovels in the ground and build stronger communities. Our investments will deliver more homes, modernize aging water systems and lay the foundation for long-term prosperity across Ontario.”
